Are you looking for an excursion for your secondary school or university STEAM group?

As part of the drive towards Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics in our education system, Wilkur Forge provides a 3-hour demonstration-only forging session aimed at students undertaking STEAM subjects.

Secondary students in the STEAM program and university students studying in engineering, arts and science streams. For students considering an apprenticeship in blacksmithing, STEAM Forge is a great way to see the trade in action.

Skill prerequisites

None as STEAM Forge is demonstration-only.

STEAM Forge covers

An over-view of the forge, its equipment and materials used in forging.

Demonstration of hand and machine forging techniques as some objects are made.

A student-led Q and A session relating to how forging works, the technology and science involved in the process and its applications in arts and engineering, all carried out in a live forge environment.

Course duration

Running for three hours on a weekday, STEAM Forge is an introduction to forging by demonstration-only. There are no fixed dates for STEAM Forge as it is scheduled and run subject to demand. To discuss your group's attendance for STEAM Forge, please Ask Wilkur Forge.

Workshop facilities

STEAM Forge runs for secondary school and university groups on excursion and includes demonstration-only use of the coke forge, anvil and hand tools, along with forging machinery.

Safety gear

Safety glasses and hearing protection will be provided by Wilkur Forge. Long cotton drill pants and a long-sleeved cotton drill shirt are required apparel for attending our courses. Closed leather footwear must be worn. If your school uniform meets these requirements, great! If not, casual clothing - subject to your school's policies - may be worn, provided it meets the above criteria.

Note - synthetic clothes and open footwear are NOT acceptable apparel to attend our STEAM Forge in due to safety considerations.

STEAM Forge three-hour demonstration-only cost

$85.00 including 10% GST per student.

Minimum of nominally 10 students, plus up to 3 accompanying teachers.

Maximum of nominally 30 students, plus up to 6 accompanying teachers.
