Hand Forge ADVANCED

Hand Forge Advanced is Wilkur Forge's high-range hand forging course.

In Hand Forge Advanced tool making is the primary focus, with the fundamental blacksmithing techniques and skills learnt in our Hand Forge Basics and Intermediate courses expanded upon.

Suited to

Those who have experience from working in their own forge and wish to further develop their hand forging knowledge.

This course is NOT suited to novices.

Skill prerequisites

Successful completion of Wilkur Forge’s Hand Forge Intermediate or Intensive courses. If you have undertaken a hand forging course elsewhere please contact us so we can determine if this course is for you.

Hand Forge Advanced covers

Tooling for creating numerous parts which are all the same size is made. Such tooling, known as jigs, helps streamline your work when you return to your own workshop.

We will be making tools for making tools in Hand Forge Advanced. Items such as finishing tools like sett hammers and flatters, top and bottom swages, fullers and punches will be created.

Workshop heat treatment – annealing, normalising, hardening and tempering - will be carried out on the tools we make.

Course duration

Running over four consecutive eight-hour days, Wilkur Forge Hand Forge Advanced courses are scheduled as per the Wilkur Forge Course Calendar.

Please note - Hand Forge Advanced is NOT included in Hand Forge Intensive.     

Workshop facilities

Hand Forge Advanced runs with two to six participants and each participant has their own coke forge, anvil and hand tools. Other tools are used in co-operation with fellow participants. There is plenty of room to move and time to ask questions and learn.

Safety gear 

You need to provide your own safety glasses and hearing protection. Long cotton drill pants and a long-sleeved cotton drill shirt are required apparel for attending our courses. Leather safety boots must be worn. Wilkur Forge will provide a leather apron for use when required during the course or you may bring your own.   

Note - synthetic or baggy clothes and non-safety footwear are NOT acceptable apparel to attend Wilkur Forge's courses in due to safety considerations.

Hand Forge Advanced four-day course cost

$1,400.00 including 10% GST per person.
