Suited to
Complete novices who have always wanted to try forging but just haven't yet.
Those who have started to show an interest in forging but have no gear.
Grandparents looking to entertain the grandkids and perhaps pick up a skill too.
Skill prerequisites
None.
One Day Forge covers
Lighting the coke forge and fire management, as these skills are crucial to a successful day's forging. The main blacksmithing tools and their functions are explained. You'll use the anvil, hand hammers and some of the other tools you'd expect to find in a blacksmith's shop to forge some items to take home.
In One Day Forge we begin by drawing out points on square and round bars. After some practice, points are forged onto carbon steel bar. After hardening and tempering using the coke forge, you’ll have a scriber and a punch made, by you, to take home.
Some mild steel bars will be twisted in various ways to explore the different effects each type of twist has on the steel. Next, the bars are formed around a jig to create useful hooks for use in the home or workshop, or as a gift. If you finish these jobs there are additional projects you can tackle.
If you've always wanted to try forging but have had trouble finding somewhere to do so, Wilkur Forge can help.
