Wilkur Forge Power Forge Basics sets the foundations for your power forging learning experience with Wilkur Forge and is predominantly a tool-making course.
A variety of forging machines has been established at Wilkur Forge. This unique approach provides a broad training experience in power forging for our course participants. With Wilkur Forge you go home having learnt on more than one kind and make of forging machine.
Suited to
Those who have experience from working in their own forge and wish to further develop their power forging knowledge.
We also offer this course to those who have purchased a power hammer and are keen to understand how to use these machines.
Skill prerequisites
Successful completion of Wilkur Forge’s Hand Forge Intermediate or Intensive courses. If you have undertaken a power forging course elsewhere please contact us so we can determine if this course is for you.
Power Forge Basics covers
The operation and use of spring and pneumatic hammers of different types is explored. Single-operator and team forging techniques are explained and demonstrated before you are encouraged to experience using these techniques with the machines.
As we can forge heavier sections with power forging machinery, we will be making tools such as sledge hammer heads, anvil tooling like hardy cutters and scrolling jigs for large scrolls, as well as larger tongs suited to power forging. You take the tooling you make home along the way to help with your future projects.
Course duration
Running over three consecutive eight-hour days, Wilkur Forge Power Forge Basics courses are scheduled as per our training calendar.
Workshop facilities
Power Forge Basics runs with two to four participants who will use coke forges and two different power hammers; a Champion Blower and Forge "Hercules" No. 1, 30kg (65lb) spring hammer and a Bucyrus Erie-branded 50kg (1cwt) single-acting pneumatic hammer. Other workshop tools are used as required in co-operation with fellow participants. There is plenty of room to move and time to ask questions and learn.
